WHY COUPLES CHOOSE THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Easy to Love. Harder to Narrow Down.

The Dominican Republic is especially appealing for destination weddings because it offers an impressive range of resort experiences.

Couples can choose from adults-only escapes, family-friendly all-inclusive resorts, sprawling properties built for groups, sophisticated luxury resorts and settings that extend far beyond the traditional beach ceremony.

The destination also gives wedding guests something important: a vacation of their own.

Between wedding events, guests can enjoy beaches, water activities, golf, adventure, culture, dining and excursions—or simply spend a few days together at the resort.

Official Dominican Republic tourism resources emphasize both the breadth of hotel wedding packages and the variety of settings available, from beaches and tropical gardens to historic and village-style locations.

The wedding brings everyone together.

The destination gives them even more to remember.

WHERE IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC?

One Island Destination. Four Very Different Experiences.

When couples say they're considering the Dominican Republic, they often really mean Punta Cana.

But that's only one possibility.

Different regions offer different scenery, resorts, activities, transportation and wedding experiences.

The better question isn't simply:

“Should we get married in the Dominican Republic?”

It's:

“Which part of the Dominican Republic feels like us?”

Official tourism resources recognize wedding and romantic experiences across Punta Cana, La Romana, Samaná, Puerto Plata, and other parts of the country.

LA ROMANA

Refined • Romantic • Distinctive

La Romana gives couples a different side of the Dominican Republic, combining Caribbean scenery with luxury resort experiences and distinctive wedding settings.

The region is also home to Altos de Chavón, where couples can find stone architecture, river views and a historic-inspired setting dramatically different from a traditional resort beach ceremony. Official regional tourism information highlights settings ranging from tropical gardens and beaches to Altos de Chavón and oceanfront resort venues.

BEST FOR:
Luxury • Distinctive venues • Romantic weddings • Couples wanting more than a beach backdrop

SAMANÁ

Lush • Romantic • Nature-Forward

Samaná is for couples who want the destination itself to feel like part of the adventure.

Known for lush landscapes and a more nature-focused experience, the region offers an appealing alternative to the larger resort corridors.

Its airport also provides access to areas including Las Terrenas and Las Galeras, although flight availability and guest transportation deserve careful consideration when planning a group wedding.

BEST FOR:
Nature • Romance • Smaller groups • Couples wanting something less resort-dense

PUNTA CANA

Resort-Rich • Convenient • Group-Friendly

Punta Cana offers one of the Caribbean's largest concentrations of destination wedding resorts, with everything from expansive family-friendly properties to sophisticated adults-only and luxury experiences.

Its major international airport and extensive resort infrastructure make it particularly attractive for wedding groups.

Official tourism information notes that Punta Cana International Airport is approximately 15 minutes from Punta Cana and Cap Cana, about 30 minutes from Bávaro and roughly 45 minutes from Uvero Alto, illustrating why the exact resort location still matters.

BEST FOR:
Resort variety • Larger groups • All-inclusive options • Guest convenience

PUERTO PLATA

Colorful • Active • Character-Filled

On the Dominican Republic's north coast, Puerto Plata combines beaches and resorts with more visible local character, history, and opportunities to explore beyond the property.

Its historic center, Victorian architecture, waterfront, and cultural attractions give guests another side of the Dominican Republic to experience.

BEST FOR:
Culture • Activities • North-coast scenery • Couples wanting resort + destination experiences

VERONICA'S TAKE

Don't automatically choose Punta Cana simply because it's the Dominican Republic destination you've heard the most about. Start with your guest list and wedding vision, then compare the regions. Sometimes the destination you hadn't considered is actually the better fit.

BEEN THERE. EXPERIENCED THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC FIRSTHAND.

Choosing a Dominican Republic Wedding Resort Goes Beyond the Beach.

The Dominican Republic has no shortage of beautiful resorts.

But the resort that looks best in photographs isn't necessarily the resort that will work best for your wedding.

Behind The Scenes evaluates the complete experience—looking beyond the beach and room photos to understand how a property will actually work for the couple and the people traveling with them.

WHAT KIND OF RESORT FITS YOUR WEDDING?

Adults-Only or Family-Friendly?

ADULTS-ONLY

Ideal for couples envisioning a romantic atmosphere centered around adult guests.

May work particularly well for:

Couples-only celebrations
Smaller adult groups
Romantic wedding weekends
Guests prioritizing dining, relaxation, and nightlife

BUT CONSIDER: Children attending the wedding, younger family members, and guest-list restrictions.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY

Ideal when your wedding includes children, extended family, or guests across multiple generations.

May work particularly well for:

Large family groups
Guests traveling with children
Multigenerational weddings
Groups needing broader activity options

BUT CONSIDER: Resort size, room locations, and how wedding spaces interact with the rest of the property.

Neither is automatically better.

The right answer depends on who's coming with you.

GETTING TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Your Wedding Starts Before Everyone Reaches the Resort.

One advantage of planning a destination wedding in the Dominican Republic is that several major resort regions have their own international gateways.

Depending on where you're getting married, guests may arrive through Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), Gregorio Luperón International Airport in Puerto Plata (POP), La Romana International Airport (LRM), or El Catey International Airport in Samaná (AZS).

But airport access is only part of the equation.

Transfer time can vary significantly based on the region and exact resort location, which is why Behind The Scenes considers flight availability, airport access, transfer time and resort location together.

MAKING IT OFFICIAL

Can U.S. Couples Legally Get Married in the Dominican Republic?

Yes.

—but Mexico requires more preparation than some destination wedding locations.

For a civil marriage, the Dominican Republic's official tourism authority currently lists documents including original passports, affidavits of marital status, original birth certificates, applicable divorce or death certificates, and two or more non-family witnesses with valid passports. Required documents must be legalized and translated into Spanish by an official translator.

Dominican government consular guidance also confirms that foreigners may marry under Dominican law and directs couples to work with the appropriate Civil Registry office regarding its requirements.

Then the same type of callout we used for Mexico:

LEGAL VS. SYMBOLIC CEREMONY

Some destination wedding couples choose to complete the legal marriage requirements at home and have a symbolic ceremony in the Dominican Republic instead.

That can simplify paperwork while still allowing the Mexico celebration to feel completely like their wedding day.

BTS PLANNING NOTE

Marriage requirements and government procedures can change. Behind The Scenes can help you navigate the planning process, but couples should confirm current legal requirements with the appropriate Dominican Civil Registry and their wedding provider.

LET'S TALK BUDGET

What Does a Dominican Republic Destination Wedding Cost?

There isn't one meaningful average price for a Dominican Republic destination wedding.

Your investment can vary significantly depending on your resort, guest count, wedding package, venue, décor, and the number of private events you host throughout the wedding weekend.

GUEST COUNT
An intimate celebration and a 100-person wedding require very different plans

PRIVATE EVENTS
Welcome parties • Rehearsal dinners • Farewell brunches

WEDDING PACKAGE

TRAVEL DATES
Season, holidays and availability can affect accommodation pricing

VENUE

WHAT WE LOOK AT INSTEAD

Rather than asking:

“What's the cheapest wedding package?”

we help couples ask:

“What will the entire wedding experience realistically cost?”

DON'T FORGET THE ROOMS

Your Dominican Republic Wedding Is Also a Group Booking.

Once you've selected your resort, your room block becomes one of the most important parts of the planning process.

Room categories, rates, deposits, deadlines, inventory, minimum room nights, concessions, and guest booking behavior can all affect your wedding group.

And because many Dominican Republic destination weddings take place at all-inclusive resorts, where guests stay and how they book can also affect the overall wedding experience.

Behind The Scenes helps bring the wedding and accommodations together so you're not managing them as two completely separate pieces of the celebration.
