MEXICO DESTINATION WEDDINGS

So Many Possibilities. One That Feels Like You.

Mexico gives destination wedding couples something few places can: choice.

Caribbean beaches, dramatic Pacific coastlines, sprawling all-inclusive resorts, intimate luxury properties, modern rooftop venues, lush gardens, and celebrations surrounded by Mexican culture can all be part of a destination wedding here.

But having more options also makes choosing the right destination and resort more important.

Behind The Scenes helps you narrow the possibilities and find the part of Mexico that works for your wedding, your guests, and the experience you want to create.

WHY COUPLES LOVE MEXICO

More Choices. More Ways to Make It Yours.

Mexico works especially well for destination weddings because there isn't one definition of what a Mexico wedding has to look like.

You can exchange vows overlooking turquoise Caribbean water, celebrate at a sprawling all-inclusive resort, host an intimate luxury wedding, incorporate Mexican culture into your weekend, or choose a dramatic Pacific setting where desert landscapes meet the sea.

The resort variety is just as impressive.

Couples can choose from adults-only retreats, family-friendly resorts, boutique hotels, luxury properties, and large resorts designed to accommodate substantial wedding groups.

And beyond the wedding, your guests can turn the celebration into a vacation filled with food, culture, history, adventure, and time together.

Mexico gives you options.

Our job is to help you find the right ones.

WHERE IN MEXICO?

One Country. Five Very Different Wedding Experiences.

One of the biggest mistakes couples make is treating “Mexico” as though it's one destination.

It's not.

Mexico's most popular destination wedding regions offer very different beaches, landscapes, resorts, activities, transportation logistics, and overall wedding experiences.

The better question isn't simply: “Should we get married in Mexico?” It's: “Which part of Mexico fits us?”

CANCÚN

Accessible • Energetic • Resort-Rich

Cancún combines beautiful Caribbean water with extensive resort options and convenient air access, making it an appealing choice for destination wedding groups.

Couples can choose among large all-inclusive resorts, adults-only properties, family-friendly options and luxury experiences while remaining relatively close to a major international airport.

BEST FOR:

Guest convenience • Resort variety • Larger groups • Couples wanting plenty of activity

RIVIERA MAYA

Diverse • Romantic • Experience-Rich

Riviera Maya gives couples an enormous range of possibilities—from large all-inclusive resorts to sophisticated luxury properties and wedding experiences surrounded by the natural and cultural attractions of the Mexican Caribbean.

The broader region includes areas such as Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, each offering its own atmosphere. Mexico's tourism authority specifically identifies these areas as part of the Riviera Maya region.

BEST FOR:

Resort variety • Excursions • Large groups • Couples wanting beach + culture + experiences

PUERTO VALLARTA + RIVIERA NAYARIT

Romantic • Cultural • Scenic

Puerto Vallarta combines Pacific coastline with the Sierra Madre Mountains, Mexican character, celebrated dining, and a strong selection of wedding venues and resorts. The destination's official tourism site highlights that distinctive combination of mountains, Banderas Bay, cuisine, and wedding venues.

BEST FOR:
Sunsets • Food • Culture • Boutique experiences • Couples wanting Mexico beyond an all-inclusive resort

COSTA MUJERES

Modern • Upscale • Relaxed

Just north of Cancún, Costa Mujeres offers a newer resort experience that can feel more removed from the energy of Cancún's Hotel Zone while maintaining convenient access to the region.

Mexico's official tourism site describes Costa Mujeres as a newer, luxe coastal destination facing Isla Mujeres and the Caribbean.

BEST FOR:

Newer resorts • Luxury • Beautiful beaches • Couples wanting a quieter resort atmosphere

LOS CABOS

Dramatic • Luxurious • Sophisticated

Los Cabos offers a completely different visual experience from Mexico's Caribbean coast.

Think dramatic coastline, desert landscapes, sophisticated resorts and elevated wedding settings rather than the classic turquoise-water Caribbean aesthetic.

BEST FOR:

Luxury weddings • Elevated design • Dramatic scenery • Couples wanting a sophisticated Pacific experience

VERONICA'S TAKE

Don't choose your Jamaica resort based on the wedding package alone. I look at the entire experience—how your guests will get there, where they'll stay, how they'll move around the property, what they'll do outside the wedding, and whether the resort actually works for your particular group.

BEEN THERE. EXPERIENCED JAMAICA FIRSTHAND.

Choosing a Jamaica Mexico Resort Goes Beyond the Brochure.

A resort can look perfect online and still be completely wrong for your wedding.

And in Mexico, where couples can choose among hundreds of resort experiences across multiple wedding regions, firsthand destination knowledge becomes especially valuable.

When evaluating Mexico resorts for our couples, Behind The Scenes looks beyond beautiful beaches and room photographs.

WHAT KIND OF RESORT FITS YOUR WEDDING?

Adults-Only or Family-Friendly?

ADULTS-ONLY

Ideal for couples envisioning a romantic atmosphere centered around adult guests.

May work particularly well for:

Couples-only celebrations
Smaller adult groups
Romantic wedding weekends
Guests prioritizing dining, relaxation, and nightlife

BUT CONSIDER: Children attending the wedding, younger family members, and guest-list restrictions.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY

Ideal when your wedding includes children, extended family, or guests across multiple generations.

May work particularly well for:

Large family groups
Guests traveling with children
Multigenerational weddings
Groups needing broader activity options

BUT CONSIDER: Resort size, room locations, and how wedding spaces interact with the rest of the property.

Neither is automatically better.

The right answer depends on who's coming with you.

GETTING TO MEXICO

Your Wedding Starts Before Everyone Reaches the Resort.

One of Mexico's biggest destination wedding advantages is the number of ways guests can reach its major resort regions.

Depending on where you're getting married, guests may arrive through Cancún International Airport (CUN), Tulum International Airport (TQO), Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), or Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR).

But the airport is only part of the equation.

The distance between the airport and your resort can have a major impact on the guest experience—particularly in destinations where resorts stretch across a large geographic area.

That's why Behind The Scenes considers flight access, airport transfers, and resort location together when helping couples compare Mexico wedding resorts.

Two resorts that look equally convenient on a map can create very different arrival experiences. We consider how your guests actually get from the airport to the resort—not simply which airport serves the destination.

MAKING IT OFFICIAL

Can U.S. Couples Legally Get Married in Mexico?

Yes.

—but Mexico requires more preparation than some destination wedding locations.

In Mexico, only a civil marriage performed through the Civil Registry is legally recognized. Requirements for foreign couples can vary by Mexican state and local Civil Registry. Mexican consular guidance specifically warns couples that requirements differ by state and recommends contacting the Civil Registry where the marriage will take place.

Depending on the location, requirements may include passports, immigration documentation, birth certificates with apostilles and Spanish translations, medical certificates or blood tests, witnesses, and documentation relating to prior marriages. For example, current Quintana Roo requirements for foreign couples include specific documentation and medical requirements.

LEGAL VS. SYMBOLIC CEREMONY

Some destination wedding couples choose to complete the legal marriage requirements at home and have a symbolic ceremony in Mexico instead.

That can simplify paperwork while still allowing the Mexico celebration to feel completely like their wedding day.

BTS PLANNING NOTE

Marriage laws and local requirements can change. Behind The Scenes can help you understand the planning process, but couples should confirm current legal requirements with the appropriate Civil Registry and wedding provider.

LET'S TALK BUDGET

What Does a Mexico Destination Wedding Cost?

There isn't one meaningful average price for a Mexico destination wedding.

Mexico offers such a wide range of resorts, wedding packages and event possibilities that two weddings with the same guest count can have completely different budgets.

Your overall investment can depend on:

  • DESTINATION - Cancún and Los Cabos can create very different wedding experiences and budgets.

  • RESORT - Property style, luxury level, and inclusions

  • GUEST COUNT - An intimate celebration and a 100-person wedding require very different plans

  • WEDDING PACKAGE - Base package versus customized celebration

  • VENUE - Beach • Garden • Rooftop • Terrace • Private event space

  • DÉCOR + FLORALS - Customization can substantially change the wedding budget

  • PRIVATE EVENTS - Welcome parties • Rehearsal dinners • Farewell brunches

  • TRAVEL DATES - Season, holidays and availability can affect room pricing

WHAT WE LOOK AT INSTEAD

Rather than asking:

“What's the cheapest wedding package?”

we help couples ask:

“What will the entire wedding experience realistically cost?”

DON'T FORGET THE ROOMS

Your Mexico Wedding Is Also a Group Booking.

Once you've chosen your Mexico resort, the room block becomes one of the most important parts of the planning process.

Room categories, rates, deposits, deadlines, inventory, concessions, and guest booking behavior can all affect your wedding group.

And at some resorts, the number of rooms or room nights booked by your group may also affect wedding benefits, events or other concessions.

Behind The Scenes helps bring the wedding and accommodations together so you're not trying to manage the resort wedding experience separately from your guests' stay.
